Ezelle and Christo Schimper, Victor Peyper and everyone at the Lirhanzo Children’s Village (LCV) would like to thank the generous people who made this much needed resource possible and available to the young people of LCV.
Unfortunately, the late arrival of the materials, coupled with heavy rains, made it impossible for construction of the well to begin. (There was too much water in the river by the time the cement arrived) The platform base for the tanks at the river was constructed by a contractor and completed by the end of 2006. It is currently in use.
Instead of working on the well, a new water suction point in the form of a sand abstraction pipe was created. The team then manufactured a pipe and buried it about 3 metres under the sand. Installation was completed in June 2007, as by then, water levels had dropped enough for them to do so.
All pipes, connections, taps, hoses, two tanks and a pump were bought with the funds received from AFADU. Everything was transported from South Africa because more than half the items were not available in Zimbabwe. Happily, everything was delivered in good condition. Through the Lions Club in Triangle, steel pipes were acquired and used to manufacture two tank stands, and extra steel was bought to complete them. Meetings with the Agricultural Extension Officer of Mwenezi and the irrigation group members, ensured health requirements for safe water were adhered to. Trenches were dug and the pipes were laid into the ground.
Most of the tanks are now complete and each holds about 500 litres of clean usable water.
The only outstanding issue with this water project is to erect sufficient stands for the tanks at other irrigation sites, so that water can be pumped, stored and used in different plots.
"In conclusion, thanks again to all the people who worked hard in Australia to make this project possible. Without your help, this would remain a dream, but you have helped us to realise it. All the people from the irrigation project would also like to express their gratitude in helping them feed their families."
Warmly,
Ezelle Schimper and Victor Peyper , Christo and everyone at the Lirhanzo Children's Village
